    There is a diverse mix of industrial and commercial water users in Georgia. They range from manufacturers of food, textiles, wood products and paper to the construction sector to wholesale and retail trade to healthcare and social assistance.
  • State and institutional water users
    The state of Georgia owns and operates nearly 14,000 buildings, which makes the state a major user of water resources.
  • Electric power providers
    A significant amount of water is required for thermoelectric power plants to produce electricity. The largest demand for water in thermoelectric plants is cooling water for condensing steam.
  • Agriculture
    The primary uses of water in agriculture include irrigation of row crops, small grains, hay, pastures, orchards, vineyards, vegetables, truck crops, greenhouses, nurseries and sod farms. Non-irrigation uses include processing, cleaning and cooling of produce; livestock watering and cooling; animal waste management; and on-farm vehicle washing, chemical mixing and shop use.
  • Landscape or irrigation professionals
    Landscape water users include retail garden centers, turfgrass and sod growers, landscape architects, landscape installation and maintenance businesses, irrigation contractors and other businesses in the nursery and horticulture industry.

Water Conservation Implementation Plan

The Water Conservation Implementation Plan is intended to guide Georgia business owners, farmers, homeowners, service providers and government officials toward greater water efficiency. It provides specific goals and best practices for the state’s seven major water use sectors: agricultural irrigation, electric generation, golf courses, industrial and commercial, landscape irrigation, domestic and nonindustrial public uses and state agencies.
